Honorary Degree for Pulp Friction CEO, Jill Carter!

Pulp Friction CIO Co-Founder Awarded Honorary Doctorate from the University of Nottingham

We’re proud to share that Pulp Friction CIO’s Co-Founder and Chief Executive, Jill Carter, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by the University of Nottingham.

The process began in November 2023, when Jill was nominated by the University’s Vice Chancellor’s Office. Speaking about the honour, Jill said “I’d have never expected to receive such a thing! I do not feel I deserve the nomination, but I accepted in the hope it will draw some attention to Pulp Friction and the work our Members are doing – and in turn recognition to the contributions Learning Disabled and Autistic people bring to our communities once allowed the chance.”

A Historic First: Jessie Speaks at Graduation

As part of the ceremony, Jill was invited to speak at the University’s Graduation Ceremony. She insisted that Jessie, a long-time Member and leader within Pulp Friction, be allowed to speak alongside her – making Jessie the first Learning Disabled person to ever speak at a University of Nottingham graduation.

A Growing Partnership with the University of Nottingham

Pulp Friction CIO continues to enjoy a strong and inclusive partnership with the University of Nottingham. We collaborate on a number of projects, including:

  • Providing work placements to the Universities students
  • Co-growing plants on University grounds for our Chelsea Flower Show 2024 project
  • Promoting shared learning and social impact between students and our Members

During their visit, Jill, Jessie, and their family were treated to a tour of the beautiful University gardens, guided by Gregg and Connie from the Estates Team. It was a great opportunity to explore the University’s green spaces and share ideas for the gardens and green areas that Pulp Friction maintains and nurtures.

By highlighting this remarkable occasion and our ongoing collaboration with the University, we hope to shine a light on the value of inclusive work, the talents of our Members, and the power of social enterprise to bring people together.
